If you’re like me, hearing “Auld Lang Syne” sung at any time of year makes you teary.

“Auld Lang Syne” is originally a Scots poem written by Robert Burns in 1788. The phrase is understood to mean “for the sake of old times” or “time gone by.”

In preparation for tonight’s festivities—or quiet reflection—here are some of my favorite New Year’s poems.
