REPLAY: Shopping for Images

Our March Poetry Today Zoom
10

Dear Friends,

Asked why he attended so many lectures in London on the subject of Chemistry, Samuel Taylor Coleridge replied: “To improve my stock of metaphors.”

In “A Supermarket in California,” Allen Ginsberg “shops for images” in the neon fruit supermarket.

Yesterday, 18 of us met to read and write poems based on the world of supermarkets. We contemplated why these spaces are so existentially stirring—the juxtaposition of color and choice, the nostalgia evoked by remembering past visits as a child, our tenuous connection to the food chain…

We also discussed what makes a strong image and metaphor, and how we might widen our understanding of both. We wrote off-camera and shared our work with each other. It was a total delight.

I hope you enjoy the replay. Please share any poems that come from the prompts below!
